Ice Fishing PERCH on Devils Lake – Quick Limit

>> THAT WIND IS BLOWING OUTSIDE. IT’S PROBABLY BLOWING 20-25 MILES AN HOUR. WE’RE UP ON DEVILS LAKE NORTH DAKOTA AND IT’S JUST WIDE OPEN OUT HERE. WHEN THE WIND BLOWS IT CAN BE BRUTAL. TODAY WE’RE OUT AFTER THESE FAMOUS JUMBO PERCH THAT HAVE MADE THIS LAKE SO WELL KNOWN.

THERE. AND WE ARE ON A GOOD OLE PERCH BITE. THIS LAKE HAS REALLY COME BACK OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) >> THAT WIND IS BLOWING OUTSIDE. IT’S PROBABLY BLOWING 20-25 MILES AN HOUR.

WIND WE DON’T PUT ON THE BROCHURES, BUT WE’RE UP ON DEVILS LAKE NORTH DAKOTA AND IT’S JUST WIDE OPEN OUT HERE. WHEN THE WIND BLOWS IT CAN BE BRUTAL. TODAY WE’RE OUT AFTER THESE FAMOUS JUMBO PERCH THAT HAVE MADE THIS LAKE SO WELL KNOWN WITH PERCH ANGLERS.

RIGHT THERE’S ONE. THERE, WOW! HA HA! AND WE ARE ON A GOOD OLE PERCH BITE. THERE. YOU KNOW, AND THIS LAKE HAS, IT HAS ITS HIGHS AND LOWS OF PERCH FISHING. THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS THIS LAKE HAS REALLY COME BACK.

>> TODAY ON DEVILS LAKE WE’RE TARGETING JUMBO PERCH. PERCH CAN BE SCATTERED ANYWHERE FROM 20 TO 50 FEET OF WATER AND WE’RE MAINLY JUST LOOKING FOR FLATS ON CONTOUR LINES. IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYTHING GROWS HEALTHY HERE.

OUR PERCH AS SOME OF THE FATTEST PERCH YOU WILL CATCH ANYWHERE AND THAT’S DUE TO THE FRESHWATER SHRIMP WHICH IS TYPICAL IN DAKOTA LAKES. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) >> I LOVE IT WHEN PERCH DIG. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) >> THERE.

THAT’S WHAT WE’RE HERE FOR. JUST A PERFECT PERCH FOR EATING RIGHT THERE. I’M GONNA KEEP A FEW TODAY. THAT’S ABOUT AS GOOD A EATING AS THERE IS RIGHT THERE. AND TYPICALLY ON DEVILS LAKE, YOU KNOW, THERE’S A LOT OF BASIN FISHING AND SO I’M USING BRAIDED LINE.

I’M JUST USING THAT SPEED SPOON THAT JUST DROPS DOWN IN THAT DEEP WATER FAST, JUST THAT DROPPER CHAIN. THAT’S JUST A VERY GOOD SYSTEM FOR PLUCKING THESE PERCH OUT OF WHAT CAN BE 30-40 FEET OF WATER AT TIMES.

(INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) >> OOOH. (CHUCKLES) >> NOW THAT PERCH IS DIGGING. LOOK AT THAT. I CAN’T HARDLY BUDGE IT. OH, YEAH. LOOK A THERE. ANOTHER NICE ONE. YEAH, LOOK AT THAT. JUST A CHUNK. THERE’S LOTS OF FISH IN DEVILS LAKE RIGHT NOW.

THEY ARE ANYWHERE FROM 11-13 INCHES. BUT YOU CAN JUST SEE THE BUILD ON THEM. THEY ARE JUST FAT, JUST A PERFECT EATING-SIZE FISH, TOO. YOU KNOW, DEVILS LAKE IS JUST A RENOWNED PERCH FISHERY AND WHAT MADE DEVILS LAKE FAMOUS WAS THE FACT THAT YOU CAN – IT’S ONE OF THE FEW PLACES AROUND WHERE YOU HAVE AN HONEST, LEGITIMATE CHANCE AT SEEING FISH OVER A POUND AND A HALF ALL THE WAY UP TO OVER TWO POUNDS.

AND THE GIRTH ON THESE FISH IS JUST AMAZING. THESE FISH MIGHT ONLY BE 12 TO 14 INCHES LONG AT TIMES, BUT THEY ARE JUST CHUNKY. THE TINY HEADS, HUGE BODIES, JUST – THEY’RE JUST BUILT LIKE A BARREL. >> WHEN IT COMES TO THESE DEEP WATER PERCH IT SEEMS LIKE SUNNY DAYS TEND TO BE A LITTLE BIT BETTER.

IT MUST BE A LITTLE BIT BETTER WATER CLARITY. SO THAT SUN SEEMS TO GET THEM FIRED UP. OBVIOUSLY, STABLE WEATHER IS ALWAYS SOMETHING YOU LOOK FOR TOO. >> SO, THERE’S A LOT OF DIFFERENT STRATEGIES OF PERCH FISHING.

YOU KNOW, THERE’S OBVIOUSLY THE NUMBER ONE STRATEGY IS FINDING FISH. AND SO IN A LOT OF CASES THAT MIGHT MEAN DRILLING A LOT OF HOLES AND JUST ELIMINATING WATER. WHEN YOU JUST GET IN THAT AREA WHERE YOU JUST HAVE THAT RHYTHM, WHERE YOU JUST HAVE THAT FLOW OF FISH COMING THROUGH, THEN A LOT OF TIMES ONE OF THE BEST STRATEGIES THAT YOU CAN DO IS JUST PLANT ON THOSE FISH AND JUST FIGURE OUT WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THEM BITE AND WORK THEM OVER BECAUSE YOU MIGHT HAVE JUST A COUPLE OF WINDOWS EACH DAY WHERE THEY OPEN UP AND BITE GOOD.

AND THEN AFTER THAT YOU JUST KIND OF PICKING AWAY AT THEM BECAUSE YOU GOTTA REMEMBER, TOO, IN THIS DEEP WATER A LOT OF TIMES A BIG PORTION OF THE DAY IT’S PRETTY DARK AND SO YOU’LL JUST GET SITUATIONS WHERE THE SUN GETS AT THE RIGHT ANGLE AND THESE FISH WILL JUST OPEN UP AND THE REST OF THE TIME YOU’RE JUST MARKING FISH, BUT THEY’RE GONNA BITE LIGHT AND SO, SET UP A HOUSE, SET UP A SHELTER LIKE WE’RE DOING TODAY AND BLOCK THAT WIND SO YOU CAN DETECT THOSE FISH.

THERE, WOW. OH, HO HO HO. COME HERE. HA HA. LOOK AT THAT. I NEVER GET TIRED OF GETTING INTO A SCHOOL OF PERCH. AND THE RACE IS ON. SO WHEN YOU HOOK INTO A FISH AND YOU CAN GET THOSE OTHER FISH THAT ARE WITH THAT FISH TO LIFT UP A FEW FEET.

TYPICALLY, THEY’RE GONNA BITE WHEN YOU GET BACK DOWN TO THEM. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) >> HERE THEY COME. THERE WE GO. OH, I LOVE THAT. YOU CAN’T REEL THEM UP FAST. OH, YEAH LOOK A’HERE. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) >> COME ON.

MY HANDS ARE COVERED IN SLIME. BY BIBS ARE COVERED IN SLIME. JUST A GOOD OLD DEVILS LAKE PERCH BEAT DOWN. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) >> LOOK AT THEM DOWN THERE NOW. THEY JUST COME THROUGH IN WAVES. THAT’S WHAT’S COOL ABOUT THIS.

YOU CAN SIT HERE FOR – LOOK A’HERE. YOU CAN SIT HERE FOR 10 MINUTES, 15 MINUTES AND NOTHING, AND THEN THEY COME THROUGH. YOU KNOW, THE FLATS CAN BE HARD TO BREAKDOWN WHEN YOU’RE LOOKING AT A SIX OR EIGHT INCH AUGER.

SPREAD YOUR HOLES APART. MAKE YOUR BIG MOVES ARE JUST TRYING TO FIND THOSE LOCATIONS, THOSE DEPTH ZONES WHERE THESE FISH ARE RUNNING, AND THEN ONCE YOU FIND THAT DEPTH AND FIND THAT ZONE WHERE THESE FISH ARE JUST MOVING BACK AND FORTH IT’S JUST A MATTER OF TIGHTENING IT UP AND JUST BEARING DOWN ON THEM.

YOU KNOW WITH THIS TYPE OF WIND YOU REALLY HAVE TO SET UP A SHELTER. YOU’RE REALLY GOING TO CATCH A LOT MORE FISH. THAT’S A NICE PERCH RIGHT THERE. AND JUST BECAUSE THESE FISH BITE SO LIGHT WHERE A LOT OF TIMES THAT ROD TIP WILL JUST BARELY MOVE BUT IF YOU’VE GOT 20-25 MILE AN HOUR WIND BLOWING AT YOUR LINE, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE IN THIS DEEP WATER, YOU’RE JUST — IT’S JUST SO HARD TO CATCH THEM AND SO A LOT OF TIMES THE NAME OF THE GAME IS JUST BLOCKING THE WIND, GETTING THE ELEMENTS OUT OF THE EQUATION SO THAT YOU CAN JUST DETECT THESE BITES.

YOU KNOW, WE’RE OUT TODAY HERE WITH THE PERCH PATROL AND YEARS AGO BEFORE I GOT INTO TELEVISION I GUIDED WITH THE PERCH PATROL FOR, OH, ALMOST 15 YEARS AND THEY’RE OUT ON THIS LAKE EVERY DAY AND OBVIOUSLY, THEY HAVE A PHENOMENAL NETWORK.

THEY’RE OUT HERE DRILLING HOLES AND DEVILS LAKE CAN BE HUGE LAKE. YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER STUMP LAKE AND ALL THE WATER NORTH OF HIGHWAY 3, AND THERE’S ALMOST 300,000 ACRES OF WATER. THE ONLY THINK I CAN TELL IS DON’T LET ALL THE WATER INTIMIDATE YOU IN THE SENSE THAT EVERY BAY, EVERY AREA OF THE LAKE HAS ITS POPULATION OF FISH.

AND SO, THERE’S GOOD FISHING ON THE MINNEWAUKEN FLATS, THERE’S GOOD FISHING AT PELICAN LAKE, THE MAIN BAY, EAST BAY WHERE WE’RE AT TODAY, EAST DEVILS LAKE, STUMP LAKE. AND EACH BASIN, EACH BAY HAS ITS OWN DEPTH, PER SE, WHERE YOU MIGHT FIND FISH.

JUST PICK AN AREA AND FISH IT AND JUST FOLLOW THOSE TRANSITIONS AND MAKE BIG MOVES UNTIL YOU START TO MAKE FISH AND THEN MAKE THE SMALL MOVES TO CATCH FISH. AND ONCE YOU GET HUNKERED DOWN IN AN AREA WHERE YOU JUST HAVE A FLOW OF FISH COMING UNDERNEATH YOU, SET UP A HOUSE, GET OUT OF THE ELEMENTS.

KEEP THAT WIND OFF YOUR LINE AND JUST DIAL IN ON THAT LIGHT BITE AND YOU TOO CAN BE SUCCESSFUL OUT ON DEVILS LAKE.
