This was our first trip for shark fishing this year. My Older Brother got me into and taught me about shark fishing and now I can’t stop. We went to Padre Island National Shore. It was a very clear and calm day. My son Caleb did all of the kayaking work, My friend Lorenzo caught bait. I supplied the gear, set up and supervised. We were catching whiting for the most part for bait. The water was still a bit too cold but we finally got a good runner that we lost on the beach. This was Lorenzo’s first time for sharks. It was my fault he lost the fish, being a circle hook, I never set it. Caleb decided to kayak one more bait, a really big whiting and taking no chances changed to two circle hooks. This time we locked up good and Caleb did a great job. Our first land based shark was a nice 4′ black tip on an 8′ Ugly Stick, a Senator 9/0 spooled with 50# Berkley Trilene Big Game Mono, a 10 ounce home made surf weight and an 18/0 Lindgren Pitman Carbon Steel Circle Hook with a 10 degree offset out of the 3rd gut. The leader was home made, a 5′ section of .95 weed eater line and 3′ of 250# plastic coated steel cable, double crimped and weight rated swivels. A Good start, I’ld say. Enjoy Y’all! I now I did!.
